What are the top trends for lighting right now?

Some of the top design trends that the Progress product development team are incorporating into their lighting designs for 2020 include an elevated Farmhouse style. This is where Coastal and Modern Farmhouse elements are combined for a casual, relaxed vibe that plays vintage wood and lightly distressed finishes against a clean and airy palette. Soft beachy hues in paint, accessories, and textiles contrast beautifully with black matte lighting and furniture made of distressed wood and metal. In lighting, black-framed fixtures are trending, offering a sophisticated look, especially when combined with geometric silhouettes, as seen in Progress Lighting's Torres island pendant. Clear glass such as the Latrobe's bottle-inspired glass shades is also having a moment, as is Satin Brass finish, a gorgeous golden finish that adds refining element to our popular Equinox pendant.

How do you see lighting changing in the next couple of years?

In the coming years, look for even more integrated LED options in lighting fixtures. LED lighting presents numerous benefits over traditional sources, such as energy savings, increased light and color output, easy installation, and low maintenance costs.

What is a key tip or hack when it comes to picking out lighting?

It's crucial to have a proper lighting plan that is layered in its approach by including ambient, task, and accent lighting in your lighting design. Ambient light is the general illumination in a space. Recessed, track, cove and soffit, overhead chandeliers, flush-mounts and natural daylight are good sources of ambient light. Accent lighting is also known as directional light; it highlights architectural elements and features like pictures or furniture. Popular accent lighting fixtures are wall sconces, directional track lighting, and directional recessed lighting. Task lighting helps to perform specific tasks. Undercabinet lighting and pendants are both excellent sources for task lighting.
